Smith & Wesson M&P15-22 Sport: A Deguns Product Review

We think a majority of people will agree with this statement: the best part about innovation is consumers get better products. Sometimes it’s eventually we get better products, but nonetheless, we keep getting cooler, smarter, and more technologically advanced products as time goes on. Innovation is exactly what we witnessed in 2016 when Smith & Wesson introduced their brand new M&P 15-22 Sport, which is the modified version of the company’s M&P 15-22, the .22 LR variant of M&P 15s.

What’s Different About the M&P15-22 Sport?

The M&P 15-22 Sport is not too different from Smith & Wesson’s M&P 15-22, but there are 2 major changes consumers should be aware of: the foldable and removable front and rear sights, and Magpul’s M-LOK rail panels. Otherwise, the M&P 15-22 Sport is simply a new and improved version of Smith & Wesson’s M&P 15-22. It has a 16.5-inch barrel, weighs just over 4.5 pounds, and shoots .22LR caliber ammunition. The Sport’s barrel, bolt carrier, and flash hider are constructed from carbon steel, and the remaining parts of the firearm are made from polymer, which allows the gun to be extremely lightweight. M&P 15-22s are comparable to AR-15s, because they look practically identical and shoot similarly; therefore, many people who shoot AR-15s regularly purchase M&P 15-22s to practice shooting. M&P 15-22s are lighter than AR-15s, which makes them easier to carry around while training, and the ammunition for M&P 15-22s is less expensive than AR-15 ammunition. M&P 15-22 and M&P 15-22 Sport rifles are often recommended for beginner shooters who are new to the sport or interested in learning how to operate AR-15s, because the controls on these firearms are the same as the controls on AR-15s. Furthermore, these firearms weigh less than AR-15s, so the recoil is less. Basically, shooters can shoot more ammunition and shoot for longer periods of time with M&P 15-22s compared to shooting AR-15s, but the training is still beneficial to their AR-15 shooting skills. Let’s take a closer look at what Smith & Wesson actually changed about their M&P 15-22 with the introduction of their M&P 15-22 Sport.

Magpul M-LOK System

On the polymer handguard of every M&P15-22, Smith & Wesson included 4 Picatinny rails for users, so they could add accessories of their choosing; however, with their M&P 15-22 Sport, Smith & Wesson did away with the Picatinny rails and instead included 2-inch rail panels with Magpul’s M-LOK system. The M-LOK system allows users to add accessories without removing the handguard of the firearm and users can mount M-LOK compatible accessories, in addition to Picatinny-style rail sections for additional accessories. The M-LOK attachment points give the M&P 15-22 Sport a sleeker look and thinner grip than the M&P 15-22. A Picatinny rail was also added to the top of the M&P 15-22 Sport handguard, so users can add an additional sight, if they wish. 1 2-inch M-LOK rail is included with every M&P 15-22 Sport.

Front and Rear Sights

In addition to adding the M-LOK system from Magpul, Smith & Wesson also included foldable flip-up sights from Magpul. The M&P 15-22 Sport features removable Magpul MBUS front and rear folding sights. This is one of the most popular folding sights systems in the world, because the sights are lightweight and durable, which further enhances the performance and value of the firearm. The Magpul MBUS sights replace the blocky sights that are on regular M&P 15-22s. Plus, the folding capability of the Magpul sights allows shooters to take the sights out of view if they choose to add optics.

Additional Features of the M&P 15-22 Sport

The adjustments made to the front and rear sights and the M-LOK rail panels are the biggest differences between the M&P 15-22 and M&P 15-22 Sport. Other than that, consumers can expect the same great firearm, just one with improved accuracy and a better accessory rail.

The Magazine

The M&P 15-22 Sport comes with 1 25-round magazine. The firearm shoots a variety of .22LR caliber ammunition, which makes this firearm a wonderful option for shooting close targets and it’s fairly inexpensive to shoot ammunition of this caliber. M&P 15-22 Sport magazines are similar in shape, size, and weight to AR-15 magazines.

Similar Controls to AR-15s

The controls on M&P 15-22 Sports are the same as basic AR-15 controls, so you would find a magazine release, manual safety, and buttstock release in the same places on M&P 15-22 Sports that you would on AR-15s. Moreover, M&P 15-22s come apart just like AR-15s. The lower receiver detaches from the upper with 2 captured pins. The lower receivers on M&P 15-22 Sports contain the standard M&P 15 trigger assembly and it is compatible with most AR-15 trigger groups.

Adjustable Buttstock

The butt stock of the M&P 15-22 Sport is made from polymer and the firearm features an angled rubber butt pad, which provides shooters an anti-slip surface and increased impact protection. The pistol grip and M-LOK on the gun is heavily textured, so shooters can have better control, as well.
